Madras High Court says no to ambulance workers' strike

No member of the union shall refrain from duty.

Chennai: The Madras high court has restrained the 108 Ambulance Workers Union Tamil Nadu in Madurai from resorting to one day strike from 8 p.m on October 17 to 8.p.m. on October 18 across the state. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M.Sundar granted the interim injunction on a PIL from advocate S.Patrick of Egmore, which sought to declare the strike as illegal.

“We pass the interim order restraining the association and its members from re-coursing to strike. No member of the union shall refrain from duty, in case of any emergency and in case there is requirement to take any patients to hospital or any medical centre. Any member refraining to drive ambulance and perform duty in case of emergency either on October 17 or 18, will do so at their own risk of consequences thereof including penalizing for contempt of court”, the bench added.
