Visakhapatnam Port Authority ranks third in cargo transportation

Visakhapatnam: The Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has ranked third among all major ports in India in terms of cargo transportation for the period April to July 2023.

The Union ministry of ports, shipping and waterways (MoPSW) reviewed the performance of major ports during this period and found that VPA had handled 33.14 million tonnes of cargo, registering a growth of 3 per cent over the same period last year.

The MoPSW considers factors such as cargo volume, pre-berthing detention time, turnaround time, output per ship berth day, and idle time at berth to assess the performance of major ports. VPA has shown progress in all these indices.

For example, the port’s pre-berthing detention time has decreased by 65 per cent, turnaround time has increased by 16 per cent, output per ship berth day has increased by 14 per cent, and idle time at berth has increased by 4 per cent.

VPA chairperson M. Angamuthu congratulated the port’s employees and stevedores for their hard work and dedication, which has helped the port achieve this feat. He also said that the port will continue to work hard to improve its performance and become the top cargo handling port in India.
