Hyderabad: Students risk lives on overcrowded bus

In the video, it was clear that the bus was already crowded as several students were seen hanging out of the door with their feet on the footboard.

Hyderabad: With a lack of enough local buses on the Ghatkesar to Bogaram route, students of a nearby engineering college broke the rear-end window glass to board an over-crowded bus, belonging to Uppal Depot, after it did not stop at the designated stop. They hung dangerously from the back of the bus. This was recorded in a video by the students and was the doing rounds in social media on Friday.

Sources said that students broke the bus window after the driver refused to stop the bus as it was already over-crowded and the ‘frustrated’ students hit the bus with stones which resulted in the breakage of toughened glass window. When the driver was about to re-start the bus, some students boarded the bus from behind by holding the rear-end seats through the broken glass, a risky affair at best.

In the video, it was clear that the bus was already crowded as several students were seen hanging out of the door with their feet on the footboard. However, there was no one who got hurt in the melee.

Reacting to this incident, the Road Transport Officials (RTC) said that there are already 15 bus trips on that route, however. They said they would now arrange three more buses, one in the morning and two in the evening to cater the numbers of students.

However, they have clarified that the additional buses would run only from Ghatkesar to Bogaram and not continue till Secunderabad like all other buses on the route do. Though there was a police case registered in Keesara Police station, it was withdrawn after the college management agreed to repair the bus window as it was broken by their students.
