Kerala: ‘Renaissance panel not to create wider Hindu unity’

Vellapally, Punnala slam Sugathan for alleging that they had hijacked Navothana Samiti.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A day after Hindu Parliament general secretary C.P. Sugathan quit the Renaissance movement, SNDP general secretary Vellapally Natesan and KPMS general secretary Punnala Sreekumar who are chairman and convener of the committee respectively, said the objective of the committee was not build a wider Hindu unity in the state. The SNDP leader hit out at Sugathan for accusing him and Punnala of hijacking the committee. “What have we hijacked ? What wrong have we done? The Navothana samiti is not for protecting Hindu unity. There are Muslims, Christians and different sections of Hindus in it. We will go to any extent to protect the renaissance values. Sugathan’s organisation is just a paper tiger and his exit will not have any impact,” Vellapally argued.

Sugathan’s style of functioning and thoughts are not in line with the ideals and goals of Renaissance committee.

KPMS general secretary said as the convener of Renaissance committee he had taken stand in favour of gender equality in public places right from the beginning. With Supreme Court stating that Sabarimala should be made a public place, it is the duty of the government which swears by Constitution to ensure gender equality in the hill shrine. The apex court judgment should be upheld.

Punnala said that even earlier Sugathan had tried to create problems in the committee.

“His ideas reflected Sangh Parivar ideology. On many occasions the committee had to seek his explanation for taking a position which was against the objectives of Navothana samiti,” he pointed out.

The KPMS leader said Sugathan’s charge that he along with Vellapally had hijacked the Navothana samiti was baseless.

“All meetings and decisions were taken in the presence of Chief Mini-ster. Let Sugathan explain how the meetings and decisions were hijacked,” he said.

Sugathan had announced the decision to quit Navothana samiti on Thursday alleging that its activities were causing hindrance in building a wider Hindu unity.

Hindu Parliament general secretary C.P. Sugathan said that Vellapally Natesan’s statement that his organisation was a ‘paper tiger’ was not correct. He was officially announcing the exit of Hindu Parliament from Navodhana samiti at a press conference in Ernakulam on Friday.

He said the activities of the renaissance committee were not in consonance with the objective of the Hindu Parliament of creating a wider unity of Hindus keeping aside political divisions.

Sugathan said the Hindu Parliament had given support to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for forming the Navodhana Samiti and not to Vellapally or Punnala.
