Telangana shows its back to Supreme Court order
Hyderabad: Even after the Supreme Court direction to provide ramp facilities for children with special needs (CWSNs), the Telangana state has shown its back towards it.
Many state-run schools are not accessible to disabled children due to lack of special educators, ramp facilities, special toilets and classrooms on the ground floor.
Despite the provisions in the Right to Education Act, only 40 per cent of the schools in the state have ramp facilities for children with special needs.
Many schools also fail to provide classrooms on the ground floor for the CWSNs. Teachers, on the other hands, said that since disabled students are studying in different standards, it is almost difficult to provide all of them classrooms on the ground floor.
P Theresa, mother of a disabled child, said, “My daughter is having cerebral issues with mental retardation. So we never enrolled her in a normal school as there are no ramps in many schools. Rather, we opted for the Bhavitha center.”
“Though many Bhavitha centres have ramps some of them do not have proper railings to take the children on wheel-chairs,” she added.
