Tamil Nadu: Organ donors honoured on World Organ Donation day

Tamil Nadu continues to lead in deceased donor transplants for the second time and has set a model for other states to emulate.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu leads in organ transplantation all over the country, with a remarkable number of 5,300 organ transplants since 2008. To acknowledge and extend gratitude to organ donors and their families, Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (Transtan) honoured the organ donors on the occasion of vunday.

The Governor of Tamil Nadu, C. Vidyasagar Rao honoured families of deceased organ donors and felicitated experts in the field of organ transplantation. He appreciated the voluntary efforts of families of donors to come forward in times of grief to provide a new lease of life to others.

“Tamil Nadu continues to lead in deceased donor transplants for the second time and has set a model for other states to emulate. However, there is a gap in the present annual requirement and availability of commonly transplanted organs,” he said.

He added that the figures of deaths due to road accidents have increased and there is a scope for a lot of organ harvesting. He urged NGOs and medicos to join hands under Transtan to sensitise people on organ harvesting.

Meanwhile, officials from Transtan said that they are working towards reducing the waitlist of patients by motivating more brain dead patients’ families for organ donation.
