Kakinada: A Redmi Note 4 smartphone burst into flames, causing a serious burn injury on the thigh of the owner.
Police said Mr Bhavana Surya Kiran, 25, the owner of a pawn shop in Ravulapalem in East Godavari district, had purchased the phone from Flipkart about 20 days ago.
On Sunday, when he was on his way to work on a motorcycle, he felt a burning sensation on his thigh.
“I noticed flames coming out of my trouser pocket, and my thigh was burning. I tried to take the phone out of my pocket, but it was not possible. I took off my trousers and tried to put out the flames,” he said. Locals came to his rescue. The phone continued to burn even after it was thrown out.
Mr Kiran said that he planned to take the issue to the consumer forum. He said that he had informed the company about the incident, and he hoped that it would solve the matter. The local police recorded Mr Kiran’s statement.
Experts say that mobile gadgets should be used carefully, as they run on batteries that are always charged. It is likely that there was some defect in the manufacturing process.
