Delhi: Man dies on way to hospital as I-Day preparations delay traffic
New Delhi: A 50-year-old man being rushed to a hospital on Saturday morning after suffering a cardiac arrest died en route as Independence Day preparations at Rajghat caused traffic diversion, resulting in delay.
According to a report in The Indian Express, the man, Kailash Chand Maurya, suffered the heart attack around 9.30 am, following which his family rushed him to Irwin Hospital in Daryaganj.
However, it took them about an hour to cover the 15-minute distance from their house to the hospital, where the doctors declared Maurya dead on arrival. The deceased’s son Bhupinder said the delay was caused due to full dress rehearsal for August 15.
“I took an auto and started for the hospital in Daryaganj. I took the Geeta Colony flyover and took a U-turn towards Rajghat, but found that police had barricaded the road. I made for ITO and found that police had barricaded the road there too. Finally, I took a route through IP Estate to Bhairon Singh Marg and then to the hospital. When we reached the hospital, it had already been an hour and doctors declared my father dead,” the son said.
Bhupinder had failed to mention to the police that his father needed immediate medical attention.
Police called the incident “sad” and said they would have let the deceased pass had the family told them it was a medical emergency.
