Telangana: Callers grill DCP over OTP frauds on radio

The officials tuned in to the FM at 10 am and answered the queries along with briefing the public about the scams.

Hyderabad: Questions on OTP frauds, Nigerian mail scams, social media harassment, mail spoofing, online job frauds and business frauds dominated a live phone-in programme organised by All India Radio on Friday morning featuring deputy commissioner of police, detective department, cyber crimes Hyderabad, Avinash Mohanty.

Surprisingly, most calls during the one-hour session came from the districts along with Cyberabad and Rachakonda commissionerate than from Hyderabad.

The phone in line was open to all the districts in Telangana and the motive was to spread awareness on cyber crimes and the precautions to be taken.

The officials tuned in to the FM at 10 am and answered the queries along with briefing the public about the scams.

“The main motive behind this session was to reach out to the masses via All India Radio, since the platform has a wide reach, and spread awareness about cyber crimes and also warn the public about the fraudulent ways the scamsters cheat them,” said Mr Mohanty.

Each call was attended to by the official and a thorough breakdown was given of the modus operandi of fraudsters. Proper explanations were given about each scams and the public was asked to keep an eye out for such fake mails or traps.

With the telecommunications services and the banks repeatedly asking the public to link the accounts with Aadhaar cards, fraudsters from northern states, mostly Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Bihar, are calling in, asking the bank credentials and OTP in the pretext of averting the account termination.

Although many customers are aware of the fraudulent calls, there are a sizeable population that falls prey to such calls and complaints poured in during the programme and people shared their plight and sought help.

The police have written to the Telecom Enforcement Resources and Monitoring asking them to take action.
