KRMB orders release of one TMC water to Andhra Pradesh, Telangana each
Hyderabad: The Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) on Thursday ordered release of two TMCft of water from Srisailam Dam, allotting one TMCft each to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to cater to the immediate drinking water requirements of Hyderabad and Nalgonda districts in the former and Guntur and Prakasam districts in the latter.
Board Chairman A.K. Srivatsava and Member Secretary Sameer Chatterjee on Thursday held consultations with Engineers-in-Chief C. Muralidhar (Telangana) and M. Venkateswara Rao (AP) and issued the order.
A KRMB communiqué said this particular release will be up to July 31 and further requirements of water will be considered thereafter. Accordingly, two TMCft of water will be released to Nagarjuna Sagar Dam from Srisailam at the rate of 7,000 cusecs per day for four days. From NS Dam, Telangana can draw its share to the Alimineti Madhava Reddy Project (Nalgonda) and the Hyderabad drinking water project, Andhra can draw it for Guntur and Prakasam.
On Thursday, NS Dam level reached 501 feet, nine feet below the Minimum Draw Down Level, whereas Srisailam level stood at 780.4 feet, much below the MDDL of 854 feet. There were no inflows recorded at either dam as there was no significant rain in the catchment areas.
