Hyderabad: In a huge relief to post graduate medical students, the Hyderabad High Court on Thursday stayed a GO issued by the AP government mandating that PG students who have completed their medical course in private colleges work for one year in the hospital of the same college instead of opting to work in government hospitals.
Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao, while admitting a petition by Dr Vithal Rao, a PG medical student, challenging GO No. 99 issued on June 23, 2017, suspended operation of the GO.
L. Ravichander, senior counsel appearing for the petitioner, told the court that as per the earlier rules, PG students who completed their course had the choice to serve one year in primary health centres and government hospitals.
He said that now, the government made it mandatory for PG students who took admissions under management quota in private colleges to serve for one year in the hospital of the college by changing the rules.
Mr Ravichander contended that this was nothing but infringement of the right of PG doctors.
Counsel appearing for the government objected to the plea contending that the writ was not maintainable as it was a purely a service matter and said that the petitioner has to avail other remedies.
The judge rejected the contention of government counsel and suspended the operation of the GO.
