Beautification plan for Vijayawada canal bunds
Vijayawada: The capital city is going to have Paris kind of canal bunds shortly. The district administration, in coordination with the VMC, is examining the technical and financial viabilities, of the canal bunds project. As there is a provision of getting financial assistance from the Central government for such kind of beautification-cum-commercial projects, the district administration is exploring those possibilities also.
In fact, the VMC has found the canal bunds in Vijayawada city as convenient places to dump construction and demolition debris. For the past few mon-ths, the practice is going on and district collector B. Lakshmi-kantham said that the Union ministry of environment and forest had specified that a separate facility should be arranged to dispose of the C&D debris in the cities having more than 10 lakh population.
Large quantities of debris can be seen on Bandar Canal bund near Krishnalanka and Kanakadurga Varadhi. Similarly, the Eluru Canal near Sitaramaraju bridge also has huge quantity of debris dumped there. After examining the debris, and also the unmanageable traffic in the city, the collector spoke to VMC commissioner Nivas to find out a plan to use the construction debris as building material, in order to bridge platforms on these two canals. “These canals will accommodate hawkers, two-wheelers and LMV vehicles, which will clear the traffic in the main junctions of the city,” the collector said.
