Hyderabad: The Telangana government has appointed 25 teachers as personal assistants to ministers, MLAs and MLCs even as government schools are witnessing zero enrolment due to lack of teachers.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday expressed dismay at the practice and the TS government on Wednesday to relieve such teachers from non-academic duties and not appoint them as PAs to politicians.
While teachers are not supposed to be engaged in non-academic activities, the government is flouting these norms despite the current shortage of over 10,000 teachers in government schools, which cater to the needs of students from under-privileged sections, who cannot afford costly private education.
The teachers draw salaries ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 90,000 per month while working as PAs for VIPs instead of taking classes for students in schools. Academics opine that the purpose for which they have been appointed is being lost on account of this.
Teachers lobby to become personal assistants to avoid working in government schools in villages and remote areas and to stay back in towns and cities while drawing teachers’ salaries from the education department, sources said.
