Schools call holiday for bandh today

Nine Left-wing students' organisations have called for a bandh of schools and junior and degree colleges.

Hyderabad: Nine Left-wing students’ organisations have called for a bandh of schools and junior and degree colleges on Thursday. The main demands of these organisations are that the state government enact a law regulating fees in private schools, improve standards in government educational institutions, control corporate educational institutions including junior colleges, and quickly implement the promised KG to PG scheme.

Mr P. Sambashiva, state secretary of Students Federation of India, said, “We have been raising these four demands for a long time. Organisations of parents have raised the high school fees issue in the past few months and we have been supporting their protests. We conducted peaceful dharnas and staged protests near schools and other educational institutions raising these demands but to no avail. Now we are pushed to declare a bandh to highlight these issues.”

On Wednesday some schools and colleges sent messages to parents informing them that the institutions would be closed on Thursday. Some schools that have a holiday on Saturdays have decided to remain open on that day in lieu of Thursday’s closure.
