Karnataka: Sea erosion poses grave threat to houses, roads in Someshwar
Mangaluru: In response to the threat of sea erosion and the potential damage it poses to the assets in Someshwar and nearby areas of Dakshina Kannada district, officials have initiated temporary works as a preventive measure.
The combined impact of the Biporjoy cyclone and the onset of the monsoon season has caused the Arabian Sea to become turbulent, with powerful waves approaching the roads and houses along the Someshwar-Batapady stretch in the last few days.
The Someshwar-Batapady stretch has been grappling with annual sea erosion, causing substantial damage to houses, roads, and even the loss of coconut trees.
Local residents have been fervently demanding a permanent solution to this recurring problem. While Basavaraj Bommai had previously proposed a permanent remedy for sea erosion, it has not been implemented yet due to various factors.
In the absence of a permanent solution and the increasing threat posed by sea erosion, the port department has commenced temporary measures. This involves depositing large stones in the affected areas to halt the sea's advance. The most severely damaged section, spanning 35 meters, is the focus of the ongoing work. The estimated cost of the temporary solution is approximately Rs 20 lakh.
"I have personally inspected the site. Unfortunately, the government was unable to implement the permanent solution last year. However, this year, I have held discussions with the district in-charge minister, Dinesh Gundu Rao, who has assured me that the permanent work will be undertaken by next year. In the meantime, we are committed to taking all necessary measures to prevent further damage," UT Khader, the Assembly speaker, and Mangalore MLA, told Deccan Chronicle.
Dinesh Guru Rao visited the sea erosion-affected places on Sunday.
Officials have identified around 10 vulnerable spots in Dakshina Kannada district that are susceptible to sea erosion. In the event of any damages occurring, the officials will seek the necessary permissions and funding to carry out the work.
