University of Hyderabad students block campus road in protest

The letter warned the students who had failed to shift that the electricity and water supply to the said hostels would soon be disconnected.

Hyderabad: University of Hyderabad students blocked the roads in the university campus after officials cut off water and electricity supply to six hostels on the campus.

Irked by the interruption and the resultant inconvenience, the students did not allow faculty members and other administrative staff to enter the premises. The administration then issued a strict warning to the students to call off the protest.

The University of Hyderabad at present houses around 650 students, who have been living on the campus to prepare for their post-graduation and integrated courses, and to appear for competitive exams.

The University of Hyderabad administration in a letter to its students on June 3 stated that a notice was issued to them on April 26 to vacate their hostels and shift to another section and that the deadline for the same, although then declared as May 4, was eventually extended to June 3 by the chief warden for some students who were taking longer to move.

The letter warned the students who had failed to shift that the electricity and water supply to the said hostels would soon be disconnected.

“The chief warden waited another six days after the warning was issued before disconnecting the electricity and water supply. Yet, angry students have taken to protesting and indulging in unfair means,” the university management said.

The students were even counselled about the fact that they had been allowed to stay on the campus to prepare for their examinations and must co-operate with the university in saving water and electricity.

Despite all measures, however, students blocked the campus roads in the morning on June 13. Subsequently, those involved in the protest were warned of severe action, said sources.
