IG Vijay Sakhare takes charge as Kochi commissioner

Mr Sakhare was serving as the Kochi range IG before the appointment.

Kochi: Inspector-General Vijay Sakhare on Thursday assumed charge as commissioner of Kochi city police.

Mr Sakhare will be the first officer in the rank of IG to become city police commissioner after the government elevated the post, as well as that of commissioner of Thiruvana-nthapuram city police, to that of an inspector general. The posts were till now held by officers in the rank of deputy inspector-general. The upgradation is part of constituting metropolitan commissionerates in the cities.

Mr Sakhare was serving as the Kochi range IG before the appointment.

Meanwhile, Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar took charge as the deputy inspector general in charge of the Kochi Range. Earlier, the post was held by IG-rank officers.

DIG K P Philip and G Poonguzhali assumed charge as additional commissioner and deputy commissioner (law and order), respectively.

S. Surendran, the incumbent commissioner, will assume charge as deputy inspector-general of police, Thrissur.
