Bengaluru: Rusting vehicles will be sent to landfill

Traffic police welcome the proposal.

BENGALURU: All those old vehicles rusting on roads and footpaths in the city will be picked and dumped at Bingipura landfill near Anekal. City Mayor Gangambike and traffic police official are exploring to find if this is feasible.

On Thursday, Mayor carried out an inspection on the 23 acre land where the soil capping has almost reaching its final stage. Officials said that only 20 percent work is left.

Raising of compound walls which was taken up at a cost of Rs 6 crore and has been completed and a tree park spreading up to 4.5 acre have been taken up at a cost of 2.5 crore.

Another 2 acre will have a goshala, the officials said and added that 10 acre of land will be exclusively given to the traffic department, where they can dump all the unused vehicles.

Traffic officials said that this move will be really helpful as they are not supposed to auction vehicles until court order. We are forced to keep the vehicles seized for crimes and accidents within our control until the court order and we can only auction them if nobody turns up to take ownership of it, the traffic officials said.

They said that instead of keeping all the vehicles in front of footpaths and roads in the city, it will be a good move to take them to the Bingipura landfill and then proceed with auction after due process.
