6-foot deep crater at Madhya Kailash

The incident took place near Church Park school, and the bus was stationary when the road caved in.

Chennai: A 6-foot deep crater appeared on the road at Madhya Kailash junction in Chennai during the early hours on Thursday. The crater was noticed around 2.30 am, and its repair work was commenced around 9 am.

The traffic police cordoned off the spot during its repair as a result of which, the traffic pretty much came to a standstill on the busy road - a significant issue, considering the junction connects to a major IT hub in the city. The vehicles were diverted through OMR to reach Kotturpuram, Guindy, and T. Nagar. According to officials, the crater could be a result of the impact of the underground drainage works in progress at the junction. However, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), which is carrying out the infrastructure works on the OMR in its second phase, denied this explanation. In another incident which took place in 2017, an MTC bus and a car were trapped inside a crater which appeared suddenly on Anna Salai. The incident took place near Church Park school, and the bus was stationary when the road caved in. Following the incident, the CMRL temporarily suspended the work between Thousand Lights and AG-DMS stations.
