More district units for police in Telangana

New headquarters will be constructed for district police units.

Hyderabad: With the TS government planning to carve out 13 new districts, the police department has initiated moves to create more district units. New headquarters will be constructed for district police units and new posts of SPs would also be created according to the number of new districts, senior police officials said. However, they said that it is highly unlikely that the status of the two commissionerates in the capital city would be changed. Currently, Hyderabad Commissionerate covers a major part of the Hyderabad district while parts of Hyderabad and RR come under the Cyberabad Commissionerate.

As per the government’s plan, one more district might be carved out of Hyderabad. But, senior police officials think that two commissionerates can handle the new district well. "Nothing is finalised. We are initiating our plans to create new units. But, the two commissionerates will remain intact. We do not see any need for a new commissionerate in Hyderabad,” said a senior official.

Senior officials said the police department expects to improve the law and order situation after the creation of new district police units. Senior cops are of the opinion that the new district units would create a positive impact on policing. Meanwhile, the staff crunch in the Telangana police could be a hindrance to creating new SP posts in new districts as there are no adequate IPS officials in the state. “We are figuring out these things. Things are all in a planning stage,” DGP Anurag Sharma said when asked about this.

Earlier, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao said that new residences and offices would be constructed for SPs in the new districts. Senior officials would submit a proposal to the Home ministry regarding new district units soon.
