Thiruvananthapuram: Spanish experts to train officials on transplantation

The government had taken the decision after accepting the proposal submitted by KNOS nodal officer Dr Noble Gracious.

Thiruvananthapuram: A three-day workshop-cum training programme covering all aspects of deceased donor multi organ transplantation activities in the state, will be held here on May 28,29 and 30.

A four-member expert team from TPM DTI Foundation Carrer de Baldiri Reixac, Barcelona, Spain will lead the training programme here. The workshop is mainly for intensivists and neuro critical care specialists.

The state government, as part of its initiative to streamline the deceased donor multi organ transplantation activities in the state, had recently appointed Transplant Procurement Managers (TPMs) in medical colleges. Neurologists/neurosurgeons/anaesthetist/intensivists were designated as TPMs. They were entrusted with the task of coordinating brain death cases in ICUs of government medical colleges.

The government had taken the decision after accepting the proposal submitted by KNOS nodal officer Dr Noble Gracious.

At the workshop, interaction will be held on various aspects of organ transplantation. Issues like screening of Intensive Care Units for detecting potential donors, data to help transplant centres to assess the suitability of potential donors, timely identification and certification of potential brain death donor, counselling for relatives of donors and public awareness about organ donation will figure at the workshop and training programme.

The induction training and advanced training by TPM DTI Foundation Carrer de Baldiri Reixac, Barcelona, is a significant initiative as it comes in the backdrop of drastic fall in the number of doctors. From 72 donors in 2016, the number had come down to three till September 26 this year.
