Collegium recommends Raghavendra Singh Chauhan as Telangana high court chief justice

These resolutions were forwarded to the Union law ministry for its consideration.

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice Raghavendra Singh Chauhan as the Chief Justice of the Telanagana High Court. Currently, Justice Chauhan is heading the Telangana HC as the Acting Chief Justice.

The Collegium of three senior Supreme Court judges — Chief Justice of India Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice S.A. Bobde, and Justice N.V. Ramana — passed a resolution three days ago for the appointments of Chief Justices to various High Courts across the country and the elevation of lawyers as judges of the High Courts.

These resolutions were forwarded to the Union law ministry for its consideration. The Collegium has also recommended the second senior most judge of the Telangana High Court, Justice V. Ramasubra-manian, as the new Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.

Justice Ramasubrama-nian’s parent court is the Madras High Court and has been on transfer to the Telangana HC.

Justice Chauhan is the senior-most judge from the Rajasthan HC. Being the senior most judge of the Telangana HC, he had taken over the charge as Acting Chief Justice of the Telangana HC in March this year, following the transfer of erstwhile Chief Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan to the Calcutta High Court.

The Collegium is of the considered view that Justice Chauhan and Justice Ramasubrama-nian, who were functioning as the senior most judges in Telangana HC, were suitable in all respects for being appointed as CJs.

The office of the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh HC would be falling vacant shortly, as the name of Chief Justice Surya Kant was recommended for the appointment as Supreme Court judge.

The Collegium also recommended the names of Justice A.A. Kureshi and Justice D.N. Patel as the new Chief Justices of Madhya Pradesh High Court and Delhi HC respectively. The Chief Justice seat of Madhya Pradesh High Court would be falling vacant, consequent upon retirement of Justice S.K. Seth and CJ seat of Delhi HC would be falling vacant very soon on the retirement of Justice Rajendra Menon.

Justice Kureshi is the senior-most judge from Gujarat HC and at present is functioning, on transfer, in the Bombay High Court.
