Chennai: Senior citizen dies of heatwave

On Monday morning, when she and 20 other workers were cleaning a lake in the village, Esher collapsed.

Chennai: A 62 -year-old woman was taken ill while working on Monday as temperatures soared over 38 c. She collapsed in the heat, was taken to hospital by ambulance but died on arrival.

Police identified the deceased as G.Esther alias Yasodha, a resident of Ammanampakkam, near Guduvanchery in Kancheepuram district. Police said Esther was working in the 100 days work scheme in the village. On Monday morning, when she and 20 other workers were cleaning a lake in the village, Esher collapsed.

Kayaru police were informed and she was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead. A case has been registered and investigations are on.

The heatwave is expected to continue into the weekend with meteorological experts warning that peak temperatures could reach as high as the mid-40s
