Ariyalur: Women workers picket wine shop on agriculture land
Ariyalur: Tension prevailed for a while at Sirukalathur village near Ariyalur on Monday as a group of local women staged a demonstration in front of a state-owned liquor retailer, Tasmac shop demanding immediate closure of the wine shop.
On information, Revenue and Police officials rushed to the spot and attempted to persuade the agitated women to give up their protest, but the poor women attempted to ransack the Tasmac shop. Following this, the Tasmac was forced to roll down its shutters.
The women agitators, mostly agriculture workers, said they suffered a lot while walking past the wine shop, which had been put up on agriculture land. They said on the way to work in the field, they had to often confront drunkards who simply threw away empty liquor bottles on the agriculture field and were so casual about it. This caused severe hardship to the farm workers, the women said.
Demanding that the Tasmac shop be closed down permanently, the agitating women gave ten days ultimatum to the authorities to close the wine shop. Otherwise, they will intensify their agitation, the women added. The outlet has been a source of nuiscance to the workers.
