Telangana soon to finish Rs 1,120 crore road work
Hyderabad: The Telangana state government has decided to take up road repair works worth Rs 1,120 crore in the GHMC area and complete them by the first week of June.
Following the directions of minister K.T. Rama Rao, the civic body held a review meeting with contractors and told them that if they failed to complete the works in the stipulated time, the corporation would blacklist them.
The officials have been asked to take up preventive road repair works on priority for black-topped roads prior to the monsoon.
Cement concrete and white-topped roads will be on second priority, as directed by the state government, as they are not only time consuming but also costlier.
GHMC commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy directed the contractors to complete the road works as per schedule without compromising on the quality.
He instructed all the departments to work in coordination and any issues should be brought to the notice of heads of departments for quick redress.
Chief engineer (maintenance) Mohammed Ziauddin said that the VDCC technology would be an ideal solution for city roads with respect to both cost and sustainability. He said the corporation has taken up periodic preventive maintenance of BT roads in 52 packages, with a minimum of five to six works in each package and some packages having even 18 works.
Tenders have been called for and work related to 21 packages has already taken off.
The state government has sanctioned '723 crore to take up the preventive maintenance of city roads. Unlike patchwork that leaves commuters experiencing back-breaking rides, the work involves milling of the existing road, re-profiling and laying of fresh road. Ideally, it ought to be done once every five years, but is rarely executed due to insufficient funds with the urban civic body.
Instead, GHMC ends up doing patchwork which results in bumpy rides for commuters. Remaining works would be taken up by Hyderabad Road Development Corporation.
