Hyderabad set for a rainy hot summer

The weather office has told the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) that the rainfall is likely to be heavy in a short duration.

Hyderabad: The Indian Meteorological Department has stated that the city will witness heavy rainfall (between 5 cm and 10 cm) and gusty strong winds ranging from 100 kmph to 150 kmph for the rest of this month. The rain is likely to be accompanied by lightning, thunder and hail.

The weather office has told the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) that the rainfall is likely to be heavy in a short duration.

The IMD has warned the corporation to keep in place a monsoon action team to deal with thunderstorm damage during May and June.

The IMD communique reads: “Hyderabad city being a tropical region faces high temperatures during the pre-monsoon season, March to May in general, but could extend till the onset of monsoon in the second week of June.

Due to trough/circulation in the atmosphere at times humid winds flow into this region from the Bay of Bengal and produce cumulonimbus clouds. Depending on the intensity of heat and humidity, the clouds could grow tall enough to produce thunderstorm and occasionally hail storm. This is a usual weather phenomenon during this season, especially in May.”

“These cumulonimbus clouds generate lightening, thunder, hail and are accompanied with very intense and short spells of rain of the order 5-10 cm per hour and strong, gusty winds of the order more than 100 kmph . There are instances when wind speeds can be up to 150 kmph also.”

The local weather bureau only issues forecast for seven days, but this is the first time that a weather alert for a long period has been issued.

IMD - Hyderabad Director Y.K. Reddy has called it a “general outlook”. “Telangana is under the alert for thunderstorm, and this warning is to alert the corporation. It was issued by IMD (Ministry of Earth Scien-ce, Begumpet),” he said.

But while a high temperature warning has been issued for Andhra Pradesh, no such alert has been sounded for Telangana.

‘The temperatures may be 1 or 2 degrees higher than normal.
