Telangana allows booze outlets within 100 metres of highways

The government plans to issue fresh licences to liquor shops and bars in July.

Hyderabad: The state government has withdrawn notices issued to liquor shops and bars operating within 100 metres of national and state highways. They were earlier asked to relocate to other areas, beyond 100 metres, from highways.

The government has decided to allow them on the ground that there are no specific directions from the Supreme Court about the same. Only a panel appointed by the top court had issued an advisory in this regard.

While the shops and bars had secured stay orders from the High Court, the government's fresh decision will resolve the issue.

The government plans to issue fresh licences to liquor shops and bars in July. In the meanwhile, it plans to seek further clarity from the top court regarding of implementation of the 100-metre norm.
