IMD warns of heatwave in parts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh

Visakhapatnam: Continuing with its series of alerts, the IMD on Friday said parts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh are likely to witness heatwave conditions in the next four to five days.

As per the IMD, parts of Srikakulam, Parvathipuram Manyam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Anakapalle, Alluri Sitarama Raju and Kakinada, East Godavari, Amalapuram and a few other districts in the state are likely to witness heat wave conditions on April 15 and 16.

Visakhapatnam touched 41.2° Celsius while the maximum temperatures were in the range of 40°C to 42°C in many parts of the state. These were above normal by 3°C to 5°C in many parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. Heatwave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets over north coastal Andhra Pradesh on April 15 and April 16. Similar weather conditions are likely to prevail on April 17 and 18.

Nandigama town in NTR district recorded the highest temperature of 42.6°C on Friday followed by Tuni in Kakinada district 42.4°C. Above 40°C was recorded in many districts on Friday. Only four to five major towns in the state recorded below 40°C.

The airport locality in Vizag city recorded 41.2 °C on Friday and the conditions were similar to heat waves in some localities in Vizag city. The temperature recorded at Waltair in Vizag city on Friday was 34.2°C. The highest temperature of 45.4°C recorded in Vizag city was on June 9, 1995 and 44°C on June 3, 2012.

The IMD also predicted that light to moderate isolated rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning/gusty winds was very likely over Kerala, Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana during the next five days.
