Opposition urges Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit to facilitate meet with PM
Chennai: A day after conducting a massive protest against the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Opposition parties in the state on Friday thronged Raj Bhavan requesting Tamil Nadu governor Banwarilal Purohit to facilitate a meeting with PM Modi to discuss the Cauvery imbroglio.
"We asked him (Purohit) if he can get us an opportunity (to meet PM Modi) and the governor assured us that he will make efforts the interaction," DMK leader M.K. Stalin, who led the opposition delegation to Raj Bhavan told reporters here on Friday.
Stalin said he informed the governor that although it was decided at a recent government held all party meeting to meet Modi on exerting pressure to form the CMB, it has not happened. A resolution also was passed in the Assembly on the Cauvery issue to lead a delegation of all parties and farmers to meet the Prime Minister to mount pressure, he reiterated.
Stalin, who concluded his Cauvery Rights Retrieval Yatra at Cuddalore on Thursday called on all-party meeting on Friday and it was decided to meet the governor on the issue. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Su Thirunavukkarasar and VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan. State secretaries of CPI(M) and CPI, K Balakrishnan and R Mutharasan also accompanied Stalin during his visit to the Raj Bhavan.
Reacting to Stalin seeking governor's intervention, senior AIADMK minister D. Jayakumar called Stalin as an opportunist. DMK, on one hand criticises the governor for taking up districtwise review meetings, but now they are seeking his intervention on the Cauvery issue. Further Stalin has been talking a lot and doing very little for the state. He also wondered why the DMK Rajya sabha MPs were not ready to resign for the sake of Tamil Nadu.
