Ayyakannu can protest, but not on Marina, Tamil Nadu tells HC
Chennai: The state government has informed the Madras high court that permission can be granted to farmers leader P.Ayyakannu to hold protest in any one of selected places for five days and not on Marina.
Additional advocate general P.H.Arvindh Pandian made the above submission when the petition filed by Ayyakannu, which sought a direction to the commissioner of police, Chennai, to permit him to stage hunger strike on Marina, demanding constitution of Cauvery Management Board, for 90 continuous days came up for hearing before Justice T.Raja on Friday.
Arvindh Pandian said the authorities were ready to give permission to the petitioner provided the petitioner seeks to protest in the selected places such as Chepauk Guest House, Valluvar Kottam that too for a period of five days only. The judge posted to April 17, further hearing of the case.
In his petition, Ayyakannu submitted that Cauvery Management Board was a long pending demand of Tamil Nadu. The state government filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking constitution of CMB to get proper share of water from Cauvery. The Apex Court directed the central government to constitute a scheme for management of Cauvery water within 45 days. The deadline expired on March 30.
But the Central government has failed to constitute the CMB. Therefore, demanding constitution of CMB immediately, the farmers have planned to stage hunger strike on Marina, he added.
