Kathua rape case: Oomen Chandy slams Narendra Modi's silence

Mr Chandy said that the news leaked out at a time when the fast-struggle against the opposition parties were ongoing.

Kottayam: Former Chief Minister Oomen Chandy on Friday came down heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi following the rape and murder of the 8-year- old girl at Jammu and Kashmir allegedly inside a temple. In a Facebook post, Mr Chandy said that the news leaked out at a time when the fast-struggle against the opposition parties were ongoing.

"The greatest challenge to the biggest democratic country is the silence maintained by the Prime Minister even many hours after the death of the child. You will become a leader having humanitarian concerns only when you are sharing the sorrow of the people of the country," Mr Chandy said in his post.

Mr Chandy said that there was no point in raising slogans such as 'Beti bachao, Beti padao" or to speak through the radio programme 'Man ki bath' unless he humanized his followers. Mr Chandy said that the activities of the Sangh Parivar on the social media in justifying the murder and rape of the child was showing how grave a threat there was to the unity of this country.
