Former Income Tax Commissioner R Mohan has been appointed private secretary to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. He will assume charge on Thursday. Mr Mohan, who resigned from the post in Coimbatore more than a year ago, is currently visiting fellow at Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation and the Centre for Development Studies.

An expert in public finance, Mr Mohan was first rank holder in MA economics, Kerala University. The appointment had its quota of controversy as it coincided with the resignation of his sister and former Chief Secretary Nalini Netto as the Principal Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister.

The row was set to rest with Mr Vijayan clarifying it at a public meeting on Wednesday evening that the "sister thought her continuation in the job did not look nice when her brother was also joining the CM office".
