Elevated corridor: Campaign on to save Cubbon Park trees

The petition states that the North-South corridor will destroy over 120 fully-grown, age old trees at the city\'s lung space Cubbon Park.

Bengaluru: With the state government pushing hard through the controversial elevated corridor project, which is going to cost the city several hundred tress, including those in and around Cubbon Park, environmentalist Brunda Sreedhar has started a 'Save Cubbon Park, Elevated Corridor Beda' campaign.

A public petition has been launched, giving a call to Bengalureans to come together on March 16 for a 'Let's save Benglauru' event at Cubbon Park. A parallel campaign, #tenderraddumadi (#cancel the tender), too has been launched to gather public opinion against the project.

The petition states that the North-South corridor will destroy over 120 fully-grown, age old trees at the city's lung space Cubbon Park. "This corridor alone will result in axing of over 3,700 trees. Bengaluru is not a Garden City anymore.

The proposed afforestation plan will take years for the saplings to grow into trees. Trees are way more important than the elevated corridor. We need fresh air to breathe. If we let trees go at this rate, Bengaluru will be uninhabitable in a few years," the petition warned. "Who knew Bengaluru would be this hot in early March? People are taking small steps at an individual level to save the planet every day. Don't we all want a future? We are supposed to fight climate change, not contribute to it," the petition said.
