Drought looms on high ranges

The extreme drought and depleting level of water sources have put them in a desperate situation.

Kozhikode: With rain gods refusing to bless, local bodies of the district's high ranges are at the receiving end.

The extreme drought and depleting level of water sources have put them in a desperate situation. Many of the waterfalls including Thusharagiri have shrunk into a thin line.

Majority areas of Kodanchery, Thiruvam badi, Koodaranji, Thama ra ssery and Puthuppadi, are facing acute shortage of water. Waterfalls have almost dried up except a thin line and the tributaries of River Chaliyar, Iruvanjippuzha and Chalippuzha are just a water line now.

Thiruvambadi MLA George M. Thomas said people are heading for a water crisis.

"If summer rains delay further the situation wou ld get worse," he told DC.

"Most of the wells have dried up, and people are struggling to source drinking water in villages."

Kodenchery village panchayat president Lissy Chacko said the intensity of drought is gradually gripping the hill region.

"We are spotting drought-prone zones and conducting water literacy campaigns to ensure people are consuming less water," she told DC.

"But we are much worried about the dwindling water-level in our drinking water pumping stations."

However, the intensity of drought is less wherever there are check-dams. The water-level of wells are up in wells where there are check-dams nearby.
