Chennai: The 70th Shankaracharya of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamy performed aradhana for his guru and 69th Shankaracharya Sri Jayendra Saraswathi at Kanchipuram near here on Tuesday.
This is the first aradhana of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi who had attained siddhi on Feb. 28. The 83-year-old seer breathed his last following illness. His health condition had deteriorated in January this year. In 1954, Jayendra Saraswathi was given the title. The senior pontiff succeeded in 1994 as the 69th Shankaracharya of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam after Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Swamigal, hailed as the Maha Periyava.
Bhajans by Govindapuram Sri Vittaldas Maharaj, Teerthanarayana Puja, Shraddanjali and Sangeeta Samarpanam by Vidwan Abhishek Raghuram and group were held later in the day.
Vasundhara Raje, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, former Union minister Murli Manohar Joshi and Coir Board Chairman and senior BJP leader C.P. Radhakrishnan were among the prominent personalities who called on Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi and obtained his blessings.
The day also coincided with the 50th jayanthy of the present Pontiff. The Mutt organised annadhanam for the devotees on the occasion.
