MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi accuses Metro of plot

Speaking during Question Hour, he demanded an independent inquiry into the MoU entered with L&T in 2010.

Hyderabad: MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi on Sunday termed the Metro Rail project as a “big scam.” Speaking during Question Hour, he demanded an independent inquiry into the MoU entered with L&T in 2010.

Mr Owaisi dismissed the argument that the Metro project would be a loss making venture and said L&T would earn over Rs 50,000 crore from this project in its lease period of 35 years by investing Rs 14,000 crore now.

He also alleged that Metro officials had played mischief by aligning the Metro Rail in such a manner in the old City that it never takes off. “Of the 1,355 properties that are being demolished for the Metro, 729 are in the old city. The 72-km Metro covers just 5.5 km in the old city. Several religious structures are sought to be demolished,” he said.

“They are fully aware that they can't break or make such religious structures but want to defame the MIM by making it appear that we are obstructing the Metro,” he said.

He asked whether the Metro needed environmental clearances. “When I suggested an alternate route along the Musi, they said they would not get environmental clearances. Now they are trying to enter into the Musi,” he said.
