Kozhikode: The Kozhikode DCC has started steps to defuse the ‘Thiruvambadi impact’ as the party fears that any tie-up between the Church and the CPM would result in wider electoral damage.
The IUML has expressed its willingness to reconsider its decision to field its candidate from the seat in the wake of the Church-backed Malayora Vikasana Samithy (MVS) making a hue and cry over the failure of League to return the seat to the Congress as promised earlier.
A prominent MVS leader told DC that informal talks had been started by a few Congress leaders on a formula to resolve the issue. “I believe the move was with the concurrence of the state Congress leadership,” he said.
However, DCC president K.C. Abu told DC that it was up to the state leadership to finalise the matter. “We have already expressed our concern to high-level leaders and are waiting for a solution,” he added.
Fearing an electoral backlash after the CPM openly expressed its willingness to work out an electoral tie-up with MVS, IUML general secretary E.T. Muhammed Basheer had said in Jeddah that the League was ready to return Thiruvambadi to Congress if it gets a safe seat.
