Chennai: Drunken driver hits cops, bikers
Chennai: An SUV with drunken man behind the wheel injured two police sub-inspectors and two bike riders, when he tried to dodge a police check point in Kulathur 200 feet road-Red Hills junction on Saturday night. The injured are recovering at a hospital, police said.
According to police, it all started from Puzhal bus stop when a police team tried to stop a speeding Mahindra Scorpio. When driver dodged the police and went ahead, the police team passed information about the vehicle to the team stationed at the next junction.
When the vehicle approached Kulathur 200 feet Road-Red Hills junction, traffic sub inspectors Izakka Muthu and Thanikavel stepped forward with stop signal.
The driver refused to the stop and went ahead hitting the two. As the vehicle tried to speed away further it injured two persons on a bike driven by Gajendran.
Immediately police and other motorists together blocked SUV and confronted the driver, who was found to be in intoxicated condition.
He was later handed over to Thirumangalam traffic police. Police identified the driver as Ramesh R, 42, of Raman Nagar, Perambur. He runs a photo studio. He was reportedly returning after visiting his sister. On the way he had a few drinks, the police said. Police also noted that he was booked under attempt commit culpable homicide under IPC section 308.
Meanwhile, his wife had lodged a complaint with the police in Sembium as he was not reachable at night. “She found his mobile switched off and there was no way to reach him. So his wife lodged a complaint with Sembium police,” police said.
