Nellore: A tainted medical officer of the community health centre at Udayagiri, Dr Ravindranath Tagore, escaped from police custody during the early hours of Thursday. He gave a slip when police were all set to produce him in court after medical examination on Thursday. He managed to sneak out between 3 am and 3.30 am.
As reported in these pages, the police had detained Dr Tagore for attempting to rape a nurse on Tuesday night at the community health centre.
According to B. Prasad, deputy superintendent of police, Kavali, there were more than four constables in the station on Wednesday night, of which, two of them had fallen asleep next to the doctor facing attempt to rape charges.
The police have launched a manhunt to trace him. The DSP said that they have formed three teams headed by sub-inspectors of Udayagiri, Varikuntapadu and Duttalur to track the accused down.
According to the DSP, Dr Ravindranath Tagore, 51 years old, was unmarried and residing in Nellore. Police believe that he could be somewhere in Nellore and are currently concentrating on places he visits regularly.
Meanwhile, Bhaskar Bhushan, Superintendent of Police, has ordered a probe into the episode of the escape of the accused to take action against those responsible.
