Tirupati: Gang attempts to rob SBI branch

An unidentified gang gained entry into the bank after removing the grills of a window with a gas cutter.

Tirupati: In a foiled bid, an unidentified gang attempted to rob State Bank of India, Bangarupalyam branch in Chittoor district during the early hours of Wednesday.

According to the police, the manager of the branch, Padmanabha Goud locked the bank after business hours on Tuesday evening before leaving the premises.

An unidentified gang gained entry into the bank after removing the grills of a window with a gas cutter. They also managed to disconnect the wires of alarm and CCTV cameras before entering the locker room.

However they took to their heels and escaped from the scene after they heard the siren of an approaching police vehicle that patrolled the area and inspected the bank on a daily basis.

Bank officials confirmed that there was no theft in the branch but an attempt to rob had definitely been made. After examining the CCTV footage in the bank, Palamaneru Deputy SP Yugandhar said five persons wearing masks were involved in the attempt to rob the bank.

The initial investigation by the police revealed, that of the five, three persons entered the bank while other two stood guard outside the main door.

Mr Yugandhar has expressed confidence in nabbing the accused with the help of clues they obtained from the CCTV footage.

State Bank chief manager Srinivasa Nayak also inspected the branch along with senior officials. Bangarupalyam SI Ramakrishan has registered the case and is investigating.
