Madras HC adjourns plea against Jeeyar for soda' remark

File FIR against Bharathiraja for speaking ill of Vinayagar'.

Chennai: The Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam has approached the Madras High Court to direct the police to register an FIR against Sadagoba Ramanuja Jeeyar for his alleged ‘soda bottle’ comments.

When the petition filed by DVK Namakkal District organiser Vairavel came up for hearing on Tuesday, Justice M.S. Ramesh directed the prosecution to get instructions from the police concerned and adjourned further hearing of the case to February 20.

Following the publication of an article written by Tamil lyricist R. Vairamuthu in a Tamil daily, in which he allegedly referred Hindu deity Andal as ‘devadasi’, the Srivilliputhur Jeeyar while addressing a meeting organised by Maadhorubaagan Iraipani Mandram to condemn the writer on January 26 has allegedly said, “the saints had kept their silence all these days. We will not keep mum anymore. We all know how to hurl soda bottles.”

Contending that the speech made by Jeeyar was instigating violence in the state, the petitioner lodged a complaint with the Inspector of Police, Thiruchengodu, to register an FIR against the Jeeyar. Since there was no response, the petitioner filed the present petition.

Meanwhile, passing orders on another petition from V.G. Narayanan, a social worker, Justice M.S. Ramesh directed the Vadapalani police to register an FIR based on a complaint from the petitioner against Tamil film director P. Bharathiraja for allegedly speaking ill of God “Vinayagar” and “Andal”, if cognisable offence was made out.

In his petition, Narayanan submitted that he came to know through visual and print media that Bharathiraja while attending a Tamil film Kadavul-2 on January 18 had without any reason, wantonly and with a malafide motive, spoken ill of God “Vinayagar” and “Andal.” Bharathiraja had been with a motive to cause religious animosity among people of different faith had been doing it repeatedly and hurting the feelings of the people. Therefore, he lodged a complaint with the Vadapalani police. Since there was no response, he filed the present petition, he added.
