DMK demands setting up of Cauvery Management Board
Chennai: Expressing concern over the centre’s move to form a single management board for all the river water disputes in the country, the DMK on Monday asked the Centre to form the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee as per the final verdict of Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.
In a resolution at the party’s high level committee meeting here, the party said the Supreme Court gave a verdict to form the Cauvery Management Board in four days, but it was not formed after the obstruction by the centre. The resolution noted that the state is not able to get Cauvery water due to the refusal to form the CMB.
As the AIADMK failed to get Cauvery water, agriculture in the delta districts had been severely affected, another resolution said and demanded the waiver of crop loans obtained by farmers from nationalised and co-operative banks, besides compensation for the 225 farmers who committed suicide.
The DMK wanted the State Election Commission to hold the local body elections without delay and the state government should cooperate for the holding of elections. It also said the free power scheme for weavers should not be affected due to UDAY scheme.
The DMK urged the centre to get President’s assent to exempt Tamil Nadu students from NEET. Another resolution urged the Centre to release 25 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan navy and 119 boats seized by them. The party condemned the centre for not granting relief funds for cyclone or drought for Tamil Nadu and demanded immediate grant of funds for relief measures.
Thanking the students and youth who protested for the holding of jallikattu, the DMK asked the state government to handle the ongoing case against jallikattu carefully and the rights of Tamils to hold their traditional game should be protected permanently.
The resolution flayed Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and the police officials for depicting the students and youth who protected peacefully as ‘anti-nationals’. The Chief Secretary and DGP should take steps to maintain law and order and ensure protection for women, the party demanded.
