Now, vehicle tracking system on KSRTC buses

Big screens will be displayed at the depots informing the running status of superclass buses.

Kochi: Transport minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan on Saturday launched global positioning system (GPS)-based vehicle tracking system on KSRTC buses.

“Many of the depots are being renovated, providing commuters with all infra facilities. The Kottayam depot garage will be inaugurated on February 29, and the work of the multi-storey building that includes shopping complex will be completed soon,” the minister said while launching the system at Kottayam.

“The system is already functional at Thiruvananthapuram. It will start functioning on an experimental basis in four more cities -- Ernakulam, Kottayam, Thrissur and Kozhikode. KELTRON is implementing the system, and fast passenger and the upper-class buses will be GPS-enabled,” Antony Chacko, managing director, told DC.

Big screens will be displayed at the depots informing the running status of superclass buses, just like that of an airport. The commuters can also avail of the mobile alert facility.

“We’ve already installed GPS on over 200 long-distance buses. The system will provide the location of buses, their speed, late running info and the expected time of arrival among others,” Mr Chacko said.

Besides, it would help get real-time information on ticket sales, vehicle fuel management and monitor driving ways of drivers among others. For the monitoring purpose, a central control room has been set up at the Thiruvananthapuram headquarters.
