SURYAPET: Researchers of Kotha Telangana Charitra (KTC) have found traces of Pedha Rathi Yugam (megalithic period) at Madharam village in Munigala mandal of Suryapet district.

KTC convenor Ramoju Haragopal said they found at the site on Kodada road Kairan (heaps of stones) and syst-burials (Samadhis), which contain Rathi salapalu, Banthi rallu and Rathi gundlu.

A 15-feet tall menhir (upright stone) has also been found in the fields at Madharam. The pillar has script-like engraving and square-shaped lines with petroglyphs in the middle. It is difficult to make them out as they have faded over time.

“But we have come to conclusion that the megaliths are from Purva Charithra Yugam (Before Christ) in between 1st and 3rd centuries. The menhir is a rare one. Such stones, along with petroglyphs, have been found only in Mudumala and Pullur areas.” Haragopal stated.

He urged officials of the heritage department and people of Madharam village to protect the 15-foot menhir. They must ensure that it does not get disturbed with any activity carried around it. It is one of the rare structures that will let coming generations know about ancient Indian culture and traditions.

Members of Kotha Telangana Charitra Vemuganti Murali Krishna, Ahobilam Karunakar and Samaleti Mahesh were among those involved in the discovery.
