Cockfight row: TD MLAs warn cops not to interfere
Vijayawada: The Telugu Desam leaders warned the police not to enter the surroundings of cockfights. Leaders are saying they are not responsible for any unple-asant situations arising from the public against cops if they enter the premises of cockfights.
Though police commissioners and superintendents of police are trying to minimise the impact of cockfights, the local police are helpless and supportive. With this, the cockfights are being organised on a large scale.
Edupugallu in Krishna district, Koppaka in West Godavari district and other prominent areas like Bhimavaram MLAs and TD leaders made arragnments on a large scale for cockfights. Punters from other states like Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Odisha had come all the way for cockfights.
The warm-up matches for cockfights had started on January 12 afternoon which aren’t serious fights. From January 13 afternoon, the real rooster fights had commenced. The Police personnel hadn’t been seen in the surrounding’s after the real fights commenced.
One of the Vijayawada ACP’s said an MLA from Krishna district indirectly gave a warning, “Please do not enter the premises of the cockfights from Friday 2pm onwards. We are not responsible if anything unpleasant situation happens with your arrival as we cannot control the public.” He added, “We could not inform this to our higher officials as it is we who had to be on the field if instructed. Even the same situation is prevailing in West Godavari district.
A TD MLA said, “Our leaders and other local leaders had already distributed commissions to the local police up to the DSP level officers for organising cockfights. Many of the officers get transferred to these places during this period with the high expectations of income from cockfights.
