Corporators quiz BWSSB chief over STP rules, Cauvery water

Members registered their opposition to the proposal and demanded that BWSSB should take back the retrospective clause.

BENGALURU: Cutting across party affiliations, corporators targeted BWSSB Chairman Tushar Girinath and the latter had to face a barrage of questions. Their main question was on the retrospective Sewage Treatment Plant for apartment complexes with 50 or more flats.

Members registered their opposition to the proposal and demanded that BWSSB should take back the retrospective clause.

Former chairman of taxation and finance Gunashekar questioned, “Of the total 1300-1400 MLD water supplied to the city, more than 30-40 percent gets leaked. Has the board reduced this percentage, if so what is the progress.”

Further, he questioned if it is possible for the BWSSB to supply water 24x7.
BJP leader and leader of the opposition at BBMP Padmanabha Reddy sought to know the status of Yethinahole project and wanted to know when will 110 villages get Cauvery water. BWSSB also came under fire for digging up newly-laid roads.

In his reply to the questions raised by corporators, Tushar Girinath said, “To provide Cauvery water to 110 villages, Rs 1,886 crore have been granted and works are on to reduce water leakage with a project costing Rs 386 crore."

Defending the STP rule, Girinath said, “Lakes are getting increasingly polluted. The rule was made in interest of the city as per the guidelines given to us by Central Pollution Control Board.”

Mayor Sampath Raj said, “The builders job ends after he hands over the building to the apartment owners. Common people should not be overburdened.”

A report will be sent to government after discussion with the BBMP legal cell, he added.
