TRS needs MIM's help to get top Wakf position

The new Wakf Act mandates that the Board is headed by an elected chairman.

Hyderabad: The ruling TRS will have to depend on its ally, Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), to get his nominee become the chairman of the Telangana State Wakf Board. The new Wakf Act mandates that the Board is headed by an elected chairman. The state government has issued a notification to elect one member from among the Muslim members of Parliament from Telangana, two members from among the Muslim members of the Telangana State Legislature, one from among the Muslim members of the Bar Council of the state and two members from among the Mutawallis and managing committees of the Wakf institutions having an annual income of Rs 1 lakh and above.

As of now, the TRS has only one MLA and four MLCs from the Muslim community, whereas the MIM has seven MLAs, two MLCs and one MP. It is, therefore, not possible for the TRS to get its nominee elected in the category of Members, Legislature. Sources said the TRS has proposed to nominate Mr Shakeel, an MLA from Bodhan, from the category of Muslim members of the Telangana State Legislature and get him elected with the support of the MIM so that he can be elected chairman of the Board.

Sources in the MIM revea-led that its leadership too is in favour of leaving the chairman’s post to the ruling party as it will help the party in distancing itself from unnecessary controversies. Even if it leaves the chairman’s post for the TRS, the MIM will still have a majority in the elected category of members as it could win one member from the MLCs, one from MPs and one from the Bar Council.
