Madras High Court loses green cover
Chennai: The ferocious Vardah cyclone wreaked havoc on the green cover in the sprawling Madras High Court campus with a large number of trees in the prestigious campus being uprooted. The cyclone also damaged a dome on the heritage building and a few vehicles parked on the campus.
The campus was an abode of several hundred age-old trees and it may be noted that the High court Registry had conducted a survey on the different species of the tress and names of the species were placed on the trees on 36 acres of the land in the campus recently.
The strong winds accompanied by incessant rainfall uprooted trees in the campus. Speaking to DC, Senior Advocate, A. Sirajudeen, said that the Vardah cyclone has destroyed the green cover in the Madras High Court campus. Almost all trees were uprooted totally and only a few trees lost their branches.
The broken trees and their branches were scattered all over the campus. Most of the entries were blocked by the debris and only Aavin entrance was opened for entry of the advocates and litigants into the campus.
Soon after learning this, an advocate sent the message through Whats App to the colleagues in the morning. Meanwhile, about nine courts including the First Court headed by the Chief Justice S.K. Kaul commenced its proceedings at about 11 am in a packed hall.
