Cyclone Vardha: Fisherman saved after 30 hours

Five of the fisherman swam to shore and Mr Acharao and one Mahendra, 19, were listed as missing.

KAKINADA: A fisherman in the East Godavari district — part of a seven-man crew — was rescued after 30 hours from a sand patch in the Bay of Bengal off Bhyravapalem Moga on Monday evening.

G. Acharao, 35, from Suryapet village had set sail with seven others on December 8. After hearing the alert on Cyclone Vardah, Acharao and his team turned the boat around and were heading home when their vessel hit an oil right and sank.

Five of the fisherman swam to shore and Mr Acharao and one Mahendra, 19, were listed as missing. But the Fisheries department and fellow fishermen ignored the rough weather and mounted a search operation for the two fishermen.

They found Mr Acharao hanging from the branch of a tree on a sand patch. Officials said he was carried to the sand patch by the waves. The dazed and confused survivor was then taken to a government hospital nearby. There has been no news of Mr Mahendra, so far.
