Hyderabad: Police foil 2 meetings against Supreme Court verdict on temple, masjid

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad police on Tuesday foiled attempts by two separate groups to speak against the Supreme Court’s verdict on Ayodhya and detained nine persons. Another person was put under house arrest.

Police arrested leaders of three organisations just before they could address a press conference at the Sundarayya Vignana Kendram in Baghlingampally. Those arrested were K. Suryam, national committee member of Indian Federation of Trade Union; V. Venkatramaiah, president, All India Kisan Majdoor Sabha; and Mohan Bairagi of Arunodaya Cultural Federation. They were taken to the Musheerabad police station.

Police also detained five activists of city-based Darsgah Jihad-o-Shahadath in Moghulpura before they were to address media in connection with the Supreme Court’s verdict. Those arrested include DJS president Abdul Majid, general secretary Salauddin Affan, organising secretary Mohammed Bin Omer, Hameed and Wasim. Police officials said these detentions were a preventive step following information that the activists may deliver provocative speeches.

The police also put Anuradha of Forum Against Hindutva Fascist Offensive under house arrest. The IFTU has condemned the arrests, calling them “attack on the freedom of expression.” It said: “This is a flimsy ground for arrests, as opinions from various quarters have been aired openly.”
